Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart announced on Friday, Feb. 14, the FBI had agreed to review the 1990 murder of Det. Dennis Wustenhoff.

Wustenhoff died Feb. 15, 1990, after a bomb exploded as he attempted to start his unmarked police vehicle that was parked in front of his home in Patchogue, police said.

In addition to the FBI’s assistance, Suffolk County Crime Stoppers has pledged a $10,000 fast cash reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.

Fast cash is a reward that is issued within 72 hours of an arrest.

Wustenhoff, who was assigned to the Narcotics Section at the time of his death, was survived by his wife, Fran, two daughters, Melissa and Jennifer, and a son, Kevin, who joined the department in 2005.

“It has been 30 years and Detective Wustenhoff’s murder remains unsolved therefore it is important that the department takes advantage of every resource available,” Hart said. “Detective Wustenhoff’s family, along with colleagues from the department, deserve justice in this case.”

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers President Nick Amarr is urging anyone with details to come forward.
